The Nevada Bicycle Coalition and the family of a Reno, Nevada postal worker and cyclist who was killed in a Reno hit and run are increasing rewards to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of drivers who hit vulnerable road users and flee in the Reno area. There have been three in the past five months, killing two people and recently putting a child in critical condition. Preliminary numbers from the National Highway Traffic Administration compiled by the family of one recent victim show the rate of hit and runs in Reno was three times higher than the national average in 2023.

“The lack of accountability for crimes committed on Reno’s streets is astounding, unacceptable and we can’t let these deadly drivers continue to roam our roads,” said Ky Plaskon, President of NevadaBike.org. “We understand that some of these collisions are not intentional. When someone flees the scene, they have committed a serious crime and the victims have no way of recovering costs from insurance or finding closure. It’s everyone’s responsibility to hold drivers responsible. Cars are deadly weapons, driving one is a privilege and that means following the law, whether it is the speed limit, stopping at a stop sign or staying at the scene of a crash.”
